Our noise colleague Arline Bronzaft, PhD, wrote this wonderful essay for the Center for Hearing and Communication on the occasion of International Noise Awareness Day last month.
Arline is truly a pioneer, recognized by the American Psychological Association for her work.
If you have ever seen a child stick his or her fingers in the ears as an emergency vehicle dashes by, you know that children find loud noise uncomfortable or even painful.
And as Arline’s research showed 40+ years ago, environmental noise interferes with learning in the classroom.
We should all be more aware of noise and its auditory and non-auditory health effects, and we should all try to make the world a quieter place. For the children’s sake, if not for our own peace of mind.
A quieter world will be a better and healthier world for all.
