This recent article in the United Kingdom’s Citti Magazine revealed that 69% of the UK public wants support measures to enforce noise violations on roads, according to a survey. The over 2,000 individuals who participated in the survey did not know about noise cameras that are being tested out in many countries to reduce noise. However, when respondents were told how noise cameras can limit road noise, 62% supported their use and only 20% opposed it.
The group overseeing the survey, Intelligent Transport Systems UK, also published a report that urges the government to support noise camera technology. To further this proposal, the company suggested that the government set up a noise group that would encourage the use of noise cameras. Transport Systems’ chief executive stressed that noise cameras can make enforcement of noise regulations easier.
It’s sad to say, but noise camera trials ended last year and the government has not shown support for this technology. The article notes that the UK has great expertise with noise camera technology and by rolling out these cameras in the UK, the streets would become quieter. The country could also become a key market to export these cameras worldwide.
As I have often said and will repeat again: the ways are there, it is the will that is lacking.
