The European Parliament Petition Group in the European Parliament reports that member Peter Agius is petitioning for enforcement of European Union noise requirements on the island of Malta. Agius complained that Maltese authorities aren’t enforcing noise requirements during evening and nighttime hours. These problematic noise sources include clubs and road repairs.

Noise isn’t just a nuisance anymore. Noise is unwanted and/or harmful sound. Nighttime noise disrupting sleep is especially harmful. As The Quiet Coalition’s Arline Bronzaft has noted, laws accomplish little if there is no enforcement. Enforcement is key.

We hope Agius’ efforts are successful. A quieter world, including on the island of Malta, will be better and healthier for all.
