The Acoustical Society of America meeting took place from June 8-10 this year. At a special session on non-occupational noise exposure and hearing loss, my noise colleague Jan Mayes presented one paper and I presented another.
Jan’s paper on “Personal Audio System Use Can Harm Auditory Health” was selected to be features in a press conference early on June 10. At Jan’s request, I handled the press conference. That led to literally worldwide publicity, the 15 minutes of fame predicted by Andy Warhol.
Here are some of the links to media coverage:
“Headphones, earbuds may affect hearing in children,” The Tribune India“This Common Habit Can Ruin Your Hearing and Increase Dementia Risk, According to Experts,” Yahoo News“Headphones and Earbuds Impact Younger Generations’ Future Audio Health,” Neuroscience News.com“How headphones, Earbuds can slowly harm your hearing over time,” Pakistan Observer“Headphones, earbuds impact younger generations’ future audio health,” Medical Xpress
I hope parents and grandparents take heed and understand that personal audio system use can cause hearing loss and tinnitus.
Looking for a safe personal audio system is like looking for a safe cigarette. They won’t find one!
