Headphones using the industrial-strength 85 decibel (dB) sound level as a volume limit are not safe for hearing. They may be safer than headphones without a volume limit, that can put out 100-125 dB sound, but they are by no means safe.
My noise colleague and coauthor Jan Mayes and I are quoted in this piece on the Healthy Hearing site, discussing children’s headphones.
The only quibble with it that I might have is that noise-induced hearing loss isn’t highly preventable, it’s entirely preventable.
Avoid loud noise starting in childhood and our ears will work well for our entire lives.
